To many Milwaukeeans, MacCanon Brown is known as a social activist, homeless advocate, and as a community leader in compassionate work. Since 1992, Brown has served as Executive Director of Repairers of the Breach, a nonprofit organization which offers the only local daytime shelter and multi-resource center to approximately 150 single homeless adults per day.
Most people are unaware of MacCanon Brown’s tiny literary career. Before her life focus became outreach to the homeless, she was a published and performing poet. She served numerous residencies in various Gifted & Talented Programs, and in the Artists in the Schools Programs of both the Iowa Arts Council and Wisconsin Arts Board.
Recently Brown published a book-length poem which is a literary/political treatise on the relationship between war and hunger. The first edition of 400 copies of End Hunger! is a fine publisher’s collector’s edition. Wider publication is currently pending.
The website featuring End Hunger! has been developed by Tegan Dowling.
